Our Procedures

01

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to save a tooth that is badly infected or decayed. During the procedure, the damaged nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth can become infected and abscesses may form.

Using our state-of-the-art surgical operating microscope, Dr. Portugeys can identify and treat all canals in the tooth with exceptional precision, significantly increasing the success rate of the treatment.

02

Root Canal Retreatment

In some cases, a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment may fail to heal or develop new problems months or even years after the initial treatment. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous filling materials, and re-cleaning and re-sealing the canals.

Dr. Portugeys uses microscopic magnification to identify missed canals, calcified canals, or other anatomical complexities that may have contributed to the initial treatment's failure.

03

Apicoectomy (Microsurgery)

An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a procedure performed when infection persists after root canal treatment or retreatment. The procedure involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and the tip of the root, removing the infected tissue, and sealing the end of the root canal.

This microsurgical approach, performed under high magnification, minimizes tissue disruption and promotes faster healing.

04

Post Removal

When a tooth requires retreatment but contains an existing post, careful removal of the post is necessary. This delicate procedure requires precision and experience to avoid damaging the root structure.

Using ultrasonic instruments and microscopic visualization, Dr. Portugeys can safely remove posts while preserving maximum tooth structure for successful retreatment.

05

Internal Bleaching

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment sometimes become discolored over time. Internal bleaching is a cosmetic procedure that whitens the tooth from the inside out, restoring a more natural and uniform appearance to your smile.

This non-invasive procedure is an excellent alternative to crowns or veneers for restoring the aesthetics of a darkened tooth.

Microscopic Endodontics

The field of endodontics has changed dramatically in the last ten to fifteen years. Advances in technology have allowed endodontists to do procedures more effectively and with great precision.

Dr. Portugeys uses a surgical operating microscope for every procedure. By magnifying the tooth as much as twenty times, this technology greatly enhances his ability to see down into the root canals, and helps him identify any additional canals and/or cracks in the tooth.

Scientific research shows that the surgical operating microscope can significantly increase the success of root canal treatment and surgical procedures performed.

In addition to the surgical operating microscope, our office uses new digital X-ray technology, which releases up to 90 percent less radiation than old-fashioned radiographs, and produces high-quality images of your tooth onto our computers.
